**Ear Syringing**

Posted on January 26th, 2022

We have previously offered an ear syringing service at the surgery for patients who have suffered from a build-up of wax in their ears resulting in discomfort or hearing loss. We always follow best guidance as it is updated and ear syringing has now been discredited as a method of removing ear wax.

The National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) has produced guidance which states that ear syringing can cause harm. It is associated with increased –

  • Ear infections
  • Ear drum perforations
  • Trauma to the ear canal

Instead best practice suggests the use of micro suctioning.

As such, in accordance with best practice, the team at Waddesdon Surgery has decided to cease offering ear syringing due to this.

We do have the option of referring patients on the NHS to our local hospitals for a micro-suction procedure but there may be significant waiting times.  Patients can choose to wait or they can self-refer for private micro-suction if they would prefer.

Patients who experience pain, discharge, dizziness, sudden deafness or have foreign bodies will still be offered an appointment and examined by our nursing team or minor illness practitioners and then referred if necessary either on the NHS to the hospital, or given information about self-care,  or private micro-suction, whichever is the patient’s preferred option.
